5 Tips for Healthy Skin

Do you want to keep your skin looking clear and vibrant?

Whether you are trying to avoid wrinkles or acne here are five tips for healthy, vibrant skin.

1. Know what ingredients are in your skin care products.

Think about what your skin is trying to soak up. Botanical oils like olive oil, almond oil and shea butter and nourishing to the skin. One the other hand mineral oils are larger than the pores of your skin, so they can coat your skin, but do not soak in and nourish as effectively as a these natural plant oils.

Read your labels and you will be surprised how many of the products use this as an ingredient. Many popular brands and even high end brands still use mineral oil, a less expensive option that is a by-product of the fuel industry.

Mineral oil can clog pores, which increases the risk of blackheads and acne. And the bottom line is that with these concerns, the mineral oil does not nourish our skin in the way a more natural oil can. Instead you can nourish your skin with lovely moisture from the many plants available to us.

2. Avoid detergent soaps.

Many soaps on the market are not actually soap, but detergent. Using these soaps will dry your skin out, which is why some brands have taken measures to do things like add moisturizing cream. Because of this, soap has a bad name. But choosing real soap, like cold-processed, will not strip you skin, but instead will gently cleanse it. Follow that cleansing with a moisturizer made with botanical oils like almond oil or jojoba oil. These ingredients further the soap’s action in cleaning without drying the skin.

3. Drink plenty of water.

Our bodies are largely made up of water. We need water for circulation and digestion and to flush out toxins. Drinking enough water goes a long way in keeping our body healthy, which in turn effects the health of our skin.

It’s also a matter of hydration. If you don’t want your skin to be parched like the Sahara desert then you need to hydrate from the inside as well as the outside.

4. Eat nutritious food.

When our gut is healthy it affects the health of our body in general, including our skin. Eating a diet that includes healthy amounts of fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds provides a source for vitamins, minerals and fiber, all nutrients that go a long way in promoting healthy skin. These foods also support the balance of gut flora and support digestion which in turn supports the vibrancy and beauty of our skin.

Other things that can support gut health are probiotic and prebiotic foods. Raw krauts, kefir and other fermented foods provided support to your gut flora. Foods high in prebiotic fiber help to nourish the flora. These include foods like garlic, dandelion greens, apples and flaxseed. In addition, bone broth can support gut healthy.

Another factor in having a healthy gut and clear skin can be how well the bowel is working. Herbs like barberry, turkey rhubarb and cascara sagrada work to support the bowel. Finding a great combination of herbs like Dr. Christopher’s Lower Bowel formula will can help your entire gut to feel more healthy.

5. Manage stress.

Stress is a crazy thing that affects us in so many ways. That includes our skin. When we face stress it can cause flareups in eczema, acne and other skin irritations. In addition wrinkles and dark circles under our eyes can enhanced by too much stress. Stress is a tricky thing to manage, but getting enough sleep, finding times to slow down and deep breathing are all tricks that can help manage stress. Adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha may also helpful in keeping the cortisol levels more balanced.
