Continue ShoppingSkin is a storyteller. It reflects what’s going on inside our bodies — from hydration to hormones, stress to sugar. And just like no two stories are exactly alike, no two skin types need the exact same care.
That’s why I love creating products with essential oils that target a wide variety of skin concerns — naturally and gently. Whether you’re dealing with breakouts, fine lines, or a little of both, essential oils have been traditionally used to help support healthy-looking skin at every stage of life.
Let’s explore a few of my favorite essential oils by skin type and concern.
If your skin tends to break out easily, certain essential oils can be helpful when diluted properly and paired with simple, non-clogging carriers. Tea tree is one of the most well-known essential oils for blemish-prone skin and is often used to reduce the appearance of breakouts. Rosemary is another favorite, traditionally used to help balance oil production. Clary sage is sometimes included in blends to support hormonally active skin.
P.S. I’ve been working on something new for clear skin — stay tuned!
For very sensitive or reactive skin, essential oils may not be the best choice. In most cases, I recommend skipping them altogether and opting for simple, gentle herbal preparations instead. If someone with sensitive skin chooses to try essential oils, very mild options like lavender or chamomile may be tolerated, but even those should be patch tested and heavily diluted.
Dry skin often benefits from nourishing essential oils that help the skin feel soft and supported. Lavender is a gentle multitasker that helps calm and moisturize. Geranium is often used to support the skin’s natural balance and resilience. Ylang-ylang adds a soft floral scent and is sometimes used to promote the appearance of a smoother, more hydrated complexion.
As skin matures, it may begin to show more fine lines, uneven texture, or changes in elasticity. Frankincense is a long-time favorite for supporting the appearance of firm, healthy skin. Geranium is often used to help tone and brighten, while ylang ylang offers a calming floral note and is traditionally used to promote skin softness.
A few things are in the works for this skin type as well — more to come!
If your skin is oily in some places and dry in others, you’re not alone — combination skin is one of the most common challenges. Lavender works well across a range of skin types and is known for its balancing effects. Geranium is another go-to for combination skin, often used to help regulate oil. Palmarosa is light and fresh, and sometimes included in blends to support tone and hydration.
Essential oils can be a beautiful part of a natural skincare routine when chosen with care. They’re not a one-size-fits-all solution, but with the right match and proper dilution, they can support healthy-looking skin through many seasons of life. Always listen to your skin, start slow, and when in doubt, simple is often best.
