These are the unsung heroes that help deliver essential oils safely to your skin and offer their own beautiful benefits in the process.
As a Master Herbalist and formulator, I’ve worked with dozens of carrier oils over the years, and I can tell you this: the carrier matters just as much as the essential oil. Let’s walk through what carrier oils are, why they’re so important, and how to choose the right one for your unique skin needs.
A carrier oil is a plant-based oil used to dilute essential oils before applying them to your skin. Essential oils are powerful and highly concentrated — applying them directly can cause irritation or even burns. Carrier oils help “carry” the essential oils into the skin safely and gently.
But carrier oils aren’t just neutral bases. They come from nuts, seeds, or fruits and are rich in nutrients, fatty acids, and antioxidants that can benefit your skin all on their own. Choosing the right one can elevate your blend from nice to nourishing.
Different carrier oils have different textures, absorption rates, and nutrient profiles — and that means not every oil is ideal for every skin type. Some are light and fast-absorbing. Others are rich and deeply moisturizing. Using the right one can help your skin feel more balanced, hydrated, and comfortable.
You can also use a carrier oil by itself — no essential oils needed — especially if you have sensitive or reactive skin. In fact, if you ever apply an essential oil that’s too strong or “hot,” like clove or oregano, don’t reach for water — reach for a carrier oil like avocado or sweet almond. It can help soothe and dilute the oil quickly and effectively.
These are some of the most versatile, skin-loving carrier oils I’ve used in my formulations and recommend often:
Actually a liquid wax, jojoba is incredibly close to the skin’s natural sebum. It’s balancing, light, and perfect for all skin types — especially combination or blemish-prone skin. It absorbs easily and won’t clog pores.
Deeply nourishing and rich in vitamins A, D, and E, avocado oil is ideal for dry or mature skin. It’s also a go-to for soothing areas that feel irritated or overexposed to harsh elements (or essential oils).
Often overlooked in skincare, olive oil is a time-tested favorite for deeply nourishing the skin. Rich in antioxidants and fatty acids, it provides lasting moisture and is especially beneficial for dry, sensitive, or aging skin. It has a heavier feel, making it ideal for night treatments or winter skin care.
A longtime favorite in massage and body care, sweet almond oil is softening and mild. It works well for most skin types and provides a smooth glide for blending.
When blending essential oils into a carrier oil, dilution is key. A little goes a long way, and too much essential oil can do more harm than good. Here’s a general guide:
1% dilution = 1 drop essential oil per teaspoon of carrier (good for face or sensitive skin)
2–3% dilution = 2–3 drops per teaspoon (great for daily body blends)
5% or more = for targeted or short-term use, like spot treatments or massage oils
Always do a patch test when trying a new blend, especially if you’re prone to sensitivity. And trust your nose — if the scent feels too strong, it probably is.
Carrier oils are more than just a base — they’re a vital part of the blend. They nourish, balance, and protect your skin while allowing essential oils to do their work gently and safely. Whether you’re building your own blends at home or just trying to make sense of ingredients on a label, learning about carrier oils is one of the best ways to care for your skin naturally.
